About Calgary

Calgary Alberta Real Estate is still one of the best places to invest in Canada. Located at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains there are many advantages to living in this great city. No longer just another oil town of the west, Calgary has thrived to be “The Heart of The New West”. Many large businesses and retailers like Wal-Mart and Canadian Tire are using Calgary as their distribution center for western Canada. Calgary is the headquarters of every major energy company taking advantage of western Canada’s huge oil, natural gas, and coal supplies. It is said that Alberta has the world’s largest reserve of safe oil in a stable democratic state.

Calgary also has surrounding towns like Langdon and Chestermere. Chestermere is located only 25minutes from downtown Calgary with its 750 acre recreation lake. Work in Calgary but want to live on a resort? Check out the Bay club condominiums on Chestermere Lake.

If you’re a sports fan Calgary is the place for you. Check of the NHL action with the Calgary Flames thriving for another chance at Lord Stanley’s cup at the Pengrowth Sadledome. If you would like a more affordable hockey experience there is always the very powerful Calgary Hitman, with ticket prices that bring a family outing into the budget. The Calgary Roughnecks brings lacrosse to Calgary a fast paced; high intensity sport that only gets more exciting with time. Despite the glamour and marketing of NFL football, the CFL still offers a bigger game and the Calgary Stampeders give a great show all summer. Baseball was brought back to town by the Calgary Vipers; peanuts and crackers jacks are available at every game. If you are a rugby fan, like Mike, keep a look out for the huge tournaments coming through the Calgary Rugby Union (CRU) like the Churchill Cup.

If you enjoy live entertainment Calgary has quite a few of opportunities for enjoying live music or theatre. The Epcor center in downtown Calgary is a great place to catch all sorts of entertainment. In the Epcor center there is the Jack Singer concert hall that features all sorts of musical events. In the Max Bell Theatre you can enjoy the great plays Theatre Calgary puts on every season. If you are looking for something a little more off beat, check out the qwarky plays put on by One Yellow Rabbit in the Big Secret Theatre or the Motel Theatre. Other great theatres include Pumphouse Theatre, Vertigo Mystery Theatre and Studio, Theatre Junction at the Grand and many more. Calgary is full of theatre groups and talented people to join them. Explore your musical side by supporting the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, or Calgary opera. Also check out the Alberta Ballet and if you enjoy that, there are always interpretive dance shows to be seen at the Grand.

May 2008 Calgary AB Market Statistics:

Needless to say the thriving city of Calgary will continue to grow and make room for many more people to come and live in this great city.  In May 2008 median condominium sale price in Calgary AB was $285,000 a change of -7.47% from April 2007’s $308,000.  There were 577 condo sales in May 2008, the highest priced condo in Calgary sold for $1,575,000, the lowest price condo sold for $128,500.

With all the market crash fears in Calgary these days it is good to look at the May 31 2008 year to date median sale price of $290,000 which is a change of -0.68% over 2007’s year to date of $292,000.  This is a slight correction but I would not call it a crash.
